FUNCTIONS APPLIED TO THE LAND

 ECONOMIC

Plantation of organic pistachio with soil protection

 [15]

Ten hectares of Pistacia vera for organic certification. Far for being a conventional intensive plantation, the area in between the pistachio lines has been grazed and fertilized by a herd of horses. During tree plantation this area will be organically fertilized and sown with fodder grasses that will be periodically harvested, thus keeping the soil intact and enriched with herb remains.

 Fodder bank

 [9, 42]

A fenced area will we planted with fodder species as food supplement for cattle in summer as well as increasing landscape biodiversity with native plant species.

Oak planting and protection of juvenile oaks

 [13]

This action includes both planting of new cork oak trees protected with wire cages and protection of existing juvenile holm oak trees. Cork oak trees are planted in open areas to restore tree cover in degraded land. Holm oak trees are prunned in the basal parts to accelerate growth and protected from cattle.

 Pasture improvement

 [20]

This is a fenced area where access by cattle can be regulated. The area is sown with a mixture of palatable grass species with high protein content (Trifolium, Lupinus). This procedure increases grass cover in the soil and plant diversity as well as pasture availability for animals.

 [34]

 Test area

 [32]

This is a fenced area adjacent to a river that can be irrigated. It will be used to test plant water aids a new tree species with market potential (mainly carob tree and madroño).

 ENVIRONMENTAL

Promotion of plant diversity in fences and streams

 [46]

Three lines (around pistachios, along a stream and along an existing fence) will be planted with several shrubs, fruit producing species to increase plant biodiversity and supply of food for wildlife, including pollinators.

 Streambed protection

 [42]

Two seasonal streams that have no riparian vegetation will be planted with fload tolerating trees, mainly Fraxinus and Salix that area also adapted to summer droughts and can eventually serve as fodder and tool for landscape diversity.

 Insect shelter

 [40]

Bird and bat houses, as well as insect hotels installed to increase biodiversity of beneficial organisms.

 Biodiversity promoting plants

 [46]

Increase plant biodiversity in protected areas to support insects, birds and mammals biodiversity.

 SOCIAL

 Create employment

 [47]

Several workers from the farm engaged mainly in oak planting and protection.

 Provide social services

 [49]

Farm involved in school work.

FIELD IMPLEMENTATION OF THE DAM PLAN

Actions to improve bioproducts, ecoservices and biodiversity

[Economic functions: fodder 9 - bee keeping 11 - natural fibers 13 - nuts 15 - pasture improvement 20 - photo hunting 29; Environmental function: Insect and bird shelter 40; Adaptation Measures: plant protector 28 - plant assist 29]

Viveros Forestales La Dehesa has foreseen for the DAM plan of «Monteviejo» farm to:

  1. Protecting local tree regeneration of Quercus using individual “cactus” protectors to defend plants from cattle grazing (Pict.1-6);
  2. Improving pasture regulating the access by cattle and sowing with a mixture of palatable grass species with high protein content (Pict. 7-9) which also provide food for pollinators (Pict. 10); water sources for cattle were restored too (Pict. 11).
  3. Creating a fodder banks as food supplement for cattle in summer as well as increasing landscape biodiversity with native plant species (Tagasaste, Pict. 12).
  4. Improving biodiversity at all level creating refuses for birds, insects and bats (Pict. 13 nestbox for bats).
  5.  Creating a plantation of organic pistachio with greening to protect soil (Pict. 14).

Additionally, the partner selected the photo hunting function (Pict. 15) to valorize and disseminate their traditional practices of bull breeding.
